The 2008 UB-Cup was different. Though we still had two visiting teams and two Mongolian teams, this year, wives and families came on tour! Though one would think this would tame the tour, there were still girls in the halls, 'police intervention', hotel security arguments, vodka, beer and fermented mare's milk for one and all.

Even with the abovementioned incidents, the tour was a success. Everyone had a great time, and we raised several thousand dollars for the Mongolian Hockey Federation, and donated over a dozen sticks and several sets of equipment (many from Finland) to the men's program.

Shanghai was to have been the tournament's 5th element, but due to their poor performance the previous week at the Taipei Tournament, they cancelled just days before the UB-Cup. It looked like Taipei had a firm grasp on the Finkle Trophy, but it managed to slip away from their grasp.

Beijing sent an advance crew of 13 to Mongolia who whet to the Secret Mongolian History Camp 110km northwest of Ulaan Baatar, to live in yurts for two nights, ride horses, hike and listen to traditional Mongolian music outdoors in -30c weather! Yoko & Gabby, the Plummer Clan of Ray, Helen & 'little John', Kim & her brother who flew in from Ontario, and amazingly, Gervais, Lilly and his 5 in-laws. Chris Edwards from the Beijing Devils Rugby Club did not expect to go on a tour quite like this - but we hadn't hit the city yet!

Friday night, the Beijing nomads came to the city, and after a 6hr flight delay, Taipei and the remainder of Beijing arrived at the Flower Hotel (www.flower-hotel.com (976) 11 458-330.) Gabby & Helen commented on why we were not staying at the Kempinski where they both have corporate rates, but unfortunately, Taipei are all poor English teachers and getting to UB broke their piggy banks!

When all were settled, Taipei tucked in for the night, and Beijing hit the town! Year after year, Strings, Seoul and the Marco Polo provide hours of entertainment for all... well at least Beijing, who crawled home at 3am.

Game 1 BJ vs. Taipei 1-6

Beijing should have been spotted a few goals for having gone out the night before after a day hiking, horseback riding and drinking vodka and mare's milk! Unfortunately, Taipei was not that charitable, and the game ended in a solid loss for Beijing. Kalle's sniper shot to the top corner was unfortunately too little, too late, but Beijing did have a good skate in -30c temperatures, but at least for this game, there was no wind, and the sun was bright!

Game 2 BJ vs. Mongolian Men 6-4

Beijing came out strong looking for a win. In 2007, the Mongolian Men beat Beijing, so Beijing was shooting shooting and skating hard. Kalle, Mikka and Ryan scored early, and by half time we were leading 5-0. Resting and overconfident, the Mongolians came back and made it 5-4 shockingly fast, but Beijing managed to hold on to the victory.

Taipei Vs. Mongolian U-18 22-0
U-18 for those who don't know (like Taipei) means that the players are UNDER 18-years old - meaning 15, 16 and 17-year old players. How and why Taipei massacred the U-18's by this score in a 50 minute game was shocking. We hope Taipei had fun. The kids didn't.

The wives and in-laws were invited by Baasandavaa to his home for a traditional Mongolian New Year's dinner. Husbands and 2 Taipei players were also allowed to come. Davaa's wife had prepared amazing traditional salads, buodzi, lamb, beef, mare's milk, Mongolian beer, and lots and lots of vodka! After several liters of vodka, we departed Davaa's home to find taxis to the hotel and the clubs. Within 5-minutes of the wives granting Gervais, Davaa, Ray & Yoko permission to go clubbing with the boys, these 4 organizers were all inside a police truck thanks to the two Taipei players and Yoko! After an hour - they were free, with wallets a little lighter, and continued to the favourite haunts. Kim and her brother were dancing stars!!!

Game 3 BJ vs. Mongolian U-18 6-3

Beijing knew that the U-18 team was young and inexperienced, so we played a very friendly game. Spectators commented that it may have been due to the night before, but Beijing's team rule was "whoever scores twice, buys 10-rounds at Seoul." Kalle was afraid to even pass near the net for fear of a deflection!

FINAL: BJ vs. Taipei 2-3 (OT)

The afternoon game was C O L D ! ! ! The wind picked up and some clouds / smog covered the sun. Wet gear from the morning game didn't help the fingers or toes either! Comments of looking like Fella were common on the bench.

Beijing decided that as this is Asia's only full contact tournament, then we might was well hit. Ray & Gervais lead this program, effectively throwing Taipei off of their form. Kalle scored 2 goals in the 1st half, and Beijing was leading 2-0 when the break came. Skating against the wind in the second half, Beijing was plagued by penalties and managed only 1 shot on net! Taipei scored a goal with 5-minutes left, and then with the clock ticking, tied the game with 30-seconds left. In OT, Taipei swarmed the net and quickly potted the winner.

Näin se on että kiekko pelataan muuallakin kun Suomessa ja rapakon takana. No joo onhan toki Devils jo vieraillut suht eksoottisissa kiekkomaissa eli Thaimaa ja Singapore. Ei ne mitään kiekkoilun suurmaita ole mutta nyt oli Reportterilla ainutkertainen mahdollisuus kokea kiekkoilua aidoimmillaan, aidoissa olosuhteissa...
Ai että missä? No paikkahan oli siis Mongolia ja sen pääkaupunki Ulan Bator.

Reportterilla kävi jälleen kauhee tuuri kun yksi Hansonin veljeksistä matkasi kiekkoilemaan Mongoliaan, ja tottakai allekirjoittanen piti tehdä vanhanaikaiset eli hypätä jänikseksi Hansonin pelikassiin. Virhe joku voisi sanoa mutta ei, ei missään tapauksessa.

Matkaan lähdettiin Pekingistä josta on suora lento Ulan Batoriin eikä se kestäkkään kuin 2½ tuntia. Perillä vastassa oli vähintäänkin kirpeä pakkassää kun mittari näytti asteita olevan -28 astetta, eli kylmä oli suomeksi sanottuna. Oksat pois omenapiirakasta, on sitä ennenkin kylmässä pelattu!

Itse turnaukseen osallistuis tälläkertaa 4 joukkuetta. Taipei Typhoon, tuttu korkkareista eiku siis Bangkokin turneesta, Pekingkin porukka jossa siis Jack Hanson mukana sekä Mongolian miesten ja U-18 maajoukkueet. Aluksi pelattiin round robbin eli kaikki kaikkia vastaan ja kaksi parasta finaaliin ja loput ronssipeliin. Pekingin pelasi ekassa matsissa Taipeita vastaan ja kirpeässä kelissä oli vastaantulija ja turpaan tuli 6-1. Mutta tuloksella ei ole väliä. Ulkokenttä, pystypuu laidat, metalli verkot päädyissä ja maaleissa, siis just niinkun sillon kun pikkupoikana kiekkoilua ulkokentillä aloteltiin. Mahtavaa!

Toisessa pelissä Peking sai vastaansa Mongolian miestenmaajoukkueen. Ottelu oli tasainen vääntö jonka Peking kuitenkin käänsi edukseen 6-4. Mongolian miesten maajoukkue kuuluu nykyään kansainväliseen kiekkoliittoon ja on ollut mukana MM-kisojen alimmassa ryhmässä. Menetys on ollut tähän asti heikkoa (ei yhtään voittoa) mutta yritystä ja asennetta riittää, ja vain sillä on merkitystä, ei sillä mikä on lopputulos.

Kolmannessa pelissä vastaan asettui Mongolian U-18 joukkue joka ei vielä tiettävästi ole kokeillut siipiensä kantavuutta kotimaan ulkopuolella. Nuoria poikia jotka nauttivat joka hetkestä kentällä. Kiekkoulun aitoutta parhaimmillaan. Näillä pojilla ei ole "Pappa betalar" meinikiä eikä uusia Bauerin luistimia eikä CCM mailoja haeta nurkan takaa Sportiasta. Niillä vehkeillä mitä kasaan saa haalittua pelataan ja pidetään hauskaa. Peking voitti ottelu herrasmiemäisesti 6-4 kun porukalla ennen peliä sovittiin että maks 1 maali per pelaaja, ja että pokien pitää kans saada tehdä pari maalia.

Okei alkusarja houdettu ja edessä oli finaali, vastaan asettui odotetusti Taipein porukka joka oli tehnyt Mongolialaisista selvää jälkeä omissa otteluissaan. Finaali pelattiin jälleen kirpeässä -29 asteen pakkasessa, eikä ylynyt viima ainakaan tehnyt oloa lämpimämmäksi. Taisi olla itseasiassa reissun kylmin päivä, muta pulinat pois, lötä jäähän ja peliä. Ottelu oli tällä kertaa paljon tasaisempi kuin alkusarjan ottelu, Pekingin johtaessa kamppailua ensin 2-0 ja vielä minuuttia ennen loppua 2-1. Kun ottelua oli noin minuutti jäljellä onnistui Taipei kuitenkin tasoittamaan ylivoimalla ja edessä oli jatkoaika. Jatkoaikaa kerittiin pelata vain pari minuuttia kun Taipein isokokoinen pakki sai maalinedus sählingin jälkeen kiekon lapaansa ja laittoi sen tyhjään maaliin. Game over ja Taipeista tuli tämän vuotinen mestari.

Illalla ohjelmassa oli turnaus Banquet johon maan tapojen mukaan kuului lammas ja votka painotteinen ateria. Ja tämän lisäksi tietysti palkintojen jako sekä paita huutokauppa jolla kasvatettiin hyväntekeväisyyspottia. Palkinnoista mainittakoon että Suomi/Devils/Hanson traditio sai jatketta kun Hanson pokkasi Pekingin tiimin MVP palkinnon, asia jolla ei varsinkaan näissä olosuhteissa ole merkitystä, mutta reportterin velvollisuus mainita.

Ne jotka on käynyt ulkomailla pelaamassa on kuullut sanonnan "Great game guys!" ja tietää mitä se tartkoittaa...tai siis niin... Monglian turnaus ylitti kaikessa allekirjoittaneen odotukset ja sanonta "Great game guys!" sai myös uuden merkityksen... Suuri osa koko turnausta on hyväntekeväisyys, eli tarkoituksena on kerätä rahaa Mongolian jääkiekkoliitolle jääkiekon kehittämiseksi. Tällä kertaa vierailevat joukkueet saivat kasaan 5000 dollaria millä saadaan kustannettua jos melkein yksi uusi kaukalo ja se on kuulkaa paljon se. Lisäksi vierailevat joukkueet lahjoittivat Mongolialaisille pari kassillista vehkeitä ja läjän mailoja, taas kelpaa Mongolian Lemieuxien ja Gretzkyjen reenata.

Kiekkoulua sen aidoimmassa muodossa, ulko jää -28 pakkasta ja menoks, tästä ei kuulkaa kiekkoulu enää hienommaksi muutu.

Hockey in Mongolia, the Finnish perspective.

Having played hockey all my life, OK I started at 6 but still, I have wanted to see also other hockey cultures other than ours back home.

I know I have been one of the lucky ones being able to fulfill this dream or at least parts of it. So far I had seen hockey played in North-America, in many countries in Europe and also in Singapore, Thailand and of course China. So I had some clue what hockey in the small hockey countries is all about.

How ever going to Mongolia is something different and it's something I would recommend to anyone who plays the game.

Playing out doors at -28 with the wooden boards with a bunch of buddies just brings it all together, the whole spirit of the game. In Finland we have had the saying in hockey that 'The best players come from the worst conditions.' by this we of course meant the Soviet Red Army team that was at the time best in the world, competing head to head with the whole NHL. Now we of course know that this is not the case anymore, but having visited Mongolia and seeing the hockey there, I wish the saying was still true.

Wouldn't it be nice to one day see the Mongolians compete head to head with some of the bigger hockey countries and maybe even some day have a professional league.

Yes, it's far away from happening but one can dream?

The charity work done by the international visiting teams is in my opinion amazing and something we all can be proud of. Even if it helps just a little it still helps and promotes the great sport of Ice Hockey. For me it has given a lot and I know it can also give a lot to the Mongolians and of course to many other people around Asia or the world.
