Dalian's
2nd Invitational Beijing finishes 2nd
Sad that only 2 from Beijing could go - Huge thanks to Bruno & John Paradis for representing Beijing. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I have to say that in the years that I’ve spent in China thus far, this dalian Tournament was definitely up there among top memories. It was an amazing time, shared by a great group of guys most of which (the Dalian boys) do not even have a proper local ice hockey rink to play in , and whom have to make long train trips to the nearest rink for getting their skates sharpened and playing hockey indoors. The trip was flawless. It all started in the flight when the Beijing boys decided to polish a bottle of whisky in the span of 20 minutes, only to have people complain about the two “loud” and “inconsiderate” foreigners partying it up at the front of the plane, while other passengers were trying to get some good rest for the whole 30 minutes of flight time (that includes 10 minutes for take off and 10 minutes for landing). After arriving in Dalian crosseyed at 8pm in the evening we made our way to meet up with some of the die hard pond tourney organizers Blake, Brownie, and Neil whom greeted us with various shots of tequila and cold beers. We barely made it out of the bar, and just when we had almost given up hope, Blake spoke 3 of the most beautiful and ear soothing magical words I had heard in years “Russian Pole Dancers”…. TIME: 4 AM –We slithered home TIME: 8 AM –Blake and Brownie revived us with Tim Hortons Coffee…..amazing! After we had arguably the most hysterical car trip up to the tourney, we finally arrived at the pond only to be greeted by 24 hardcore hockey fans mostly holding beers, Tim Hortons coffee and some kind of liquor that tasted great but made us feel like ^%$&% the next morning.
Highlights of the day: The Beijing boys arrived at the pond extremely green, Jon Paradis aka Jon “Pukie” Paradis got his name after puking more on the ice than any man I had ever seen. We were just about to reach the phone to call Guiness when things suddenly got more interesting, as one of the boys after looking for quite some time for the perfect spot to place his coat, found it best to put in in a bush that Jon “Pukie” just emptied his insides into.
Beyond all the fun and laughter it was overall a great day of 3 on 3 shinny hockey, with clear skies and good pond ice paving the way. Everyone battled hard. We were all low on fuel so we decided to replace water bottles with beer bottles. Some exceptional games of pond hockey were on display that day eventually leading to the final showdown.
Darren (Dalian Dragons), Dave (Dalian Dragons), Jon (Revs), and Bruno (Revs) battled hard, but their stamina and hangover had finally gotten the better half of them, and succumbed to a 5-3 loss against the all Americans. Better luck in Brazil 2012. After another legendary night of good eats, hockey awards, drinking, Russian pole dancing, bars, the Dalian tournie had come to an end. Cheers Dalian boys, Ray and everyone involved in organizing this! Will be even better next year I’m sure once we get greater numbers from Beijing. Chris Anweiler…you’re a star!
